Acording to a new post from the WSJ The Federal Reserve plans to launch an assessment this week of the potential benefits and risks of issuing a US digital currency as central banks around the world experiment with the potential new form of money.
Proponents say a digital dollar from the Fed could make it faster and cheaper to move money through the financial system, bring people who don’t have bank accounts into it, and provide the government with an efficient way to distribute financial aid.
“It’s just really hard for me to imagine that given the dollar’s status as the dominant currency in international payments, the US wouldn’t come to the table with a similar offer in those circumstances,”
